Do You Have Green, Yellow or Black Algae?
If you have even a little algae in your pool, your pool is not safe to swim in. Why? The algae is trying to covert your pool or spa back to a more natural state like you see in a river, stream or lake. People swim in those all the time? Yes, people swim in rivers, streams and lakes but they have reached a natural balance. If there is algae in your pool, the algae is aggressively trying to turn your pool into the natural state of water. When algae is aggressive, it can quickly infect any sores or wounds or other things. So you must get the algae treated quickly before it spreads too far or makes anyone sick.
Should I go buy algaecide at the store? Green algae, yellow algae and black algae are all different and require different chemicals and different treatment protocols. If you try to treat yellow (mustard) algae like green alage, it will not go away and continue to get worse quickly. If you try to treat black algae like green algae, if will not work at all.
How can I fix my green pool and make it swimmable again? First, identify which algae you have. Second, add the appropriate algaecide. Third, add lots of chlorine. Fourth, turn your pool pump on to run 24 hours a day. Fifth, brush the entire pool. After 24 hours, clean your filters. Monitor the chlorine levels as the algae will eat it up quickly. Repeat this process until your pool is clear. AFTER your pool is clear, you may need to replace the filters.
